A Gallery of Bali Dogs

The Story of Dogs in Bali

There are many dogs in Bali. Most of them are in a sorry state — emaciated, flea-ridden, mangy, and possibly rabid. Dogs aren't treated well in Bali — some Balinese believe that dogs are reincarnated thieves and cutthroats. Other times, dogs (especially puppies) are used in religious sacrifice to placate evil spirits.

While dogs are used to guard homes and property, many of them don't seem to be fed on a regular basis and access to water is limited. Sick animals are frequently abandoned, and dog can be found on menus (so it’s said, but we didn't see this ourselves).

Dogs We Met in Bali

We met a lot of dogs in Bali. Most of them ignored us, but a few were a little more aggressive and let us know they didn’t appreciate us being around. Here are a few of the more memorable canines we came across.

The state of the average Bali dog is a sorry one, but there are two organizations, Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) and Bali Dog Adoption and Rehabilitation Center (BARC), that are helping to make the lives of Bali dogs a little better. They've both got their work cut out for them.
